Somethings to consider:
Did you install banshee from the repositories or from source?
If you installed from the repositories did you install the banshee
headers? I don't know how if Debian makes the distinction but other
distributions will have a separate package for what's required to run
a package, and the headers that package provides when building other
things from source. Ubuntu uses the package name postfix -dev for the
latter. Fedora uses -devel
Did you install the right version? Debian's notoriously slow to
incorporate upstream changes. Lenny only has version 1.0.0-1 in the
repository.
