Are you using the Docky theme?

If yes, then this already exists!  I think you have to enable the
'Window Manager' plugin first, then summon and search for 'show
desktop', hit <tab> and type 'current' and then click the + to add it
to your dock.  It will add an icon that has a title of 'Current
Desktop' which when clicked does what you want.
