I wrote the VirtualBox plugin, They provide a pretty rich command line
interface that allows you to query vm status, start, stop, save state,
restore, etc for VMs. Surely vmware has something similar?

I'm certain there is. I got a few requests to do a vmware plugin
after I finished with the virtualbox one, but I don't use vmware so it
was not so easy to get motivated to write one!
