Hey Ask! It looks great :-). Yo migth want to take a look into my gttk.sh script ( https://github.com/dmustieles/gnome_scripts/blob/master/gttk.sh) to handle both author and documentation files (author basically relies in local git's config).
Currently it is not able to change to gitlab if push fails, but it is really easy to add it.
