Reduce the number of recent items shown by running:

 gconftool -t int \
 --set /desktop/gnome/applications/main-menu/file-area/max_total_items
<number>

You can also open the configuration editor (System->Preferences or
Applications->System Tools) and navigate to
       /desktop/gnome/applications/main-menu/file-area/
and change the value of max_total_items there.
