I've been using docky for this purpose.  Which seems to be doing what you
are asking for.  In addition it also tells me what apps are open which if
you have a slide in and slide out mechanism it doesn't allow for.  (unless
of course there is an option to turn it off)  I'm hesitant to ask for such a
feature when docky already seems to fill this space.
