It's a major release: we broke a lot of stuff to clean our desktop up. 3.2
should be a lot better.

Can you tell me certain frustrations with the message tray?

Well, this is a bit trickier than Adam described: GNOME3 also has a fallback
mode that uses updated versions of gnome-panel and libpanelapplets and
gnome-applets. These updated versions drop the dependencies like Bonobo (and
maybe CORBA/ORBit, dunno) so we don't have to waste space on the install
media.
