As mentioned here [1] I would like to discuss the possibility of having
gnome-shell show icons (or widgets?) on the desktop. Maybe it has been
discussed before, I don't know.

Right now, the task of showing icons on the desktop is carried out by
nautilus. This is apparently an issue for Wayland, so maybe the task could
just be delegated to gnome-shell instead.

I think it would not be an issue to have different "styles" of
files/folders between the desktop and nautilus. Actually, it may even be
better (as one may want to have different types of "widgets", not just
files and folders).

By the way I looked up "gnome shell widgets" and found gdesklets, which I
am now trying to use but seems to not work (maybe it's the same wayland
issue, like nautilus).
