It's just another convention.

You really gotta ask yourself whether it's better to display "61.2 MB
Volume" or "64M volume" when the physical media already says "64M" as
part of the branding. IMO the former will just confuse/piss off the user
and diverge him from the task at hand which is actually, you know, using
the media :-).  He might even waste time reading articles like this one
http://www.pcguide.com/intro/fun/bindec-c.html :-) 

Of course, most media will have filesystem labels and we will just
display these instead.
