Sorry for being late to chime in here, but notwithstanding the various  
arguments for or against XHTML, there is one very good reason to use XHTML:

Plone (which the wgo project uses) exclusively uses XHTML templates,  
everywhere. If you want to reinvent and manually modify the 200+ templates  
in Plone to use HTML 4 instead of XHTML, there's quite a lot of work to do.

Plone uses XHTML 1.0 Transitional as its base, but can be upgraded to  
XHTML Strict if necessary.
