Using zlib over gzip is usualy quite easy to fix.

   I (and I suspect many Arch users) really like the transparent and
   orthogonal aspects of Arch, and would like to see Arch 2.0 continue
   that tradition.

Agreed, you get far more flexibility since you can write scripts that
play with the metadata.  And you don't need special tools to read the
stuff.
