Indeed, the convention is to use a $ for simple users, and a # for
root, isn't it ?

A colored $ or % would avoid the confusion I believe.

Assuming, of course, that you are using a browser capable of/configured to showing colors. If I'm not using/exporting an X display, I'll use links, lynx, or w3m configured to not use color.

I think that not showing the prompt character at all avoids confusion. YMMV.
