Plus other news Reply-To: [email protected] A lot going on at ISOC-NY this week. First and foremost tonight Thurs 10/8 we are holding an ISOC-NY Forum at NYU on current changes in the way ICANN is set up. This is going to be a lively discussion. We are flying in Dr. Milton Mueller, founder of the Noncommercial Users Constituency, just for the occasion. If you can't make it you can still watch the webcast live. http://www.isoc-ny.org/?p=3D886 Then tomorrow Friday 10/9 Free Culture @NYU are putting on an extravaganza - 'Memefactory' - that will delve deeply into the world of Keyboard Cats and similar contemporary phenomena. This is going to be a verrry popular so get there early to grab a good seat. http://www.isoc-ny.org/?p=3D881 On a more serious note, at 2pm on Saturday 10/10 at Queens Central Library, Ali Emami will speak on the topic =91Twitter and the Iranian Election Controversy=92 - Ali was originally lined up to speak on OneWebDay but couldn't make it but we still very much want to hear his report. This will be videotaped for a later webcast. http://www.isoc-ny.org/?p=3D878 Speaking of video on demand - there's a good clip out of Geneva this week of ISOC Chairman & CEO Lynn St. Amour pontificating on the future of the Internet. ISOC was there participating in ITU Telecom World 2009, co-hosting the Internet Pavilion with the theme "Open Internet: Open standards - open processes - open innovation", as well as sponsoring multiple forums. At the Youth Forum ISOC launched the new 'Next Generation Leaders Programme' - a fellowship program for young up and comers. http://www.isoc-ny.org/?p=3D919 The other big news of the week was that NYC has officially put out an request for proposals to acquire and run a .nyc top level domain. ISOC-NY was happy to see that the city intends to, as long proposed by our friends at Connecting.NYC, make it a 'closed' domain with plenty of second level names reserved for community use, and verification that all registrants have a "nexus" to the city. http://www.isoc-ny.org/?p=3D902 Joly MacFie Secretary - ISOC-NY http://isoc-ny.org ____ Internet Society - NYC Metropolitan Area Chapter http://isoc-ny.org 'The Internet is for Everyone." ___________________________________________ Announce mailing list [email protected] http://lists.isoc-ny.org/listinfo.cgi/announce-isoc-ny.org</blockquote> Distributed poC TINC: Jay Sulzberger <[email protected]> Corresponding Secretary LXNY LXNY is New York's Free Computing Organization. http://www.lxny.org _______________________________________________ gnu-misc-discuss mailing list [email protected] http://lists.gnu.org/mailman/listinfo/gnu-misc-discuss
