Using RH 5.2, I had guile-related problems compiling Lilypond, too, but I
resolved them by compiling guile from source rather than installing from an
rpm file. If you've installed guile from an rpm, you might try uninstalling
it, and compiling from source. Guile compiled and installed first time, and
I had no further problems compiling lilypond after that.
