As far as I can remember, \repeat wasn't invented in version 1.0.17.
I can recommend that you install version 1.2.17, which is a fairly
recent, still fairly stable, version. You can find it from the
Lilypond web page, www.lilypond.org
If you stick to your current version, you could get the repeat signs
but not the prima volta/secunda volta using \bar ":|"; and so on.
