I could actually recommend to download the source code package
(watch out that you get the same version as the one you have
installed), just to have access to the directories
input/ and input/test/ (which contains lots of short examples 
of the different features) and mutopia/ (with some full scores).
As you probably have noticed, the documentation is not always
complete and up to date, so these example files are often the
best available ``documentation'' of different Lilypond 
features.
