I have a feeling keeping -no-undefined will cause lots of Makefile.am files to
require modification, AFAICT mainly test programs.

Why do you think this?  libtool is supposed to notice that we depend
on libguile and pull it in..  Except in those tests that specifically
require guile themselves, which should probably just include GUILE_LIBS
in the LD_LIBS.
