What I do is to use a chroot. I first create a sarge chroot with "debootstrap", then chroot into it, change apt sources from stable to unstable and... that's it, you can play and test the new version in unstable without disturbing your sarge box :) If you don't know how to prepare a chroot, please search some howto in google :) I'm currently testing the spanish translation this way.
