After I confirmed this with a data file from the Debian bug-submitter, I opened 344170 in gnucash bugzilla. Has anyone had a chance to examine it? (I normally wouldn't prod like this, but it's sitting at the very highest severity level for a Debian bug, because it causes serious data loss.)
