They're also ancient, and should probably be removed.

Try the RelaxNG schema <src/doc/xml/gnucash-v2.rnc>.  It's also
non-normative, and reverse-engineered from datafiles. It's *mostly*
complete.

You can convert from that schema to DTD (or XSD) with
<http://www.thaiopensource.com/relaxng/trang.html>, but if your goal is
understanding, the Relax NG Compact syntax is easily more readable than
other formats.
