I got it going now.  My mistake was deleting the old slackware gnome packages
after I compiled gnome-2.2 using garnome. I reinstalled the old gnome packages
and now I have compiled gnucash-1.8.1, and it seems to be running fine so far. 
Sorry if I am on the wrong list.
