This comment is interesting, because this was precisely the reason for me to implement HBCI for German online banking. Since this is now implemented since the beginning of this year, Gnucash "has quite enough functionality to be useful for" the particular group of German online banking users! In that respect I tried to do exactly this in this specific area.
The outcome is, well, not *really* impressive. We made it into SuSE's press announcements of their latest distributions, and the gnucash-de mailing list has some activity but not too much. It is not really measurable whether focussing here on a particular user group gave enough benefit to try this for other particular needs as well.
