I tried in my working directory, not gnucash/po/ directory. I hope no other files besides the 2 in command line are needed.
Nope, should work fine, you only need the .pot and .po file. Oh, well, you also need to have the gettext "msgfmt" and "msgmerge" executables.

$max_msg is not getting calculated. Do you have these two executables installed from gettext:
/usr/bin/msgfmt /usr/bin/msgmerge
?
I've just added some sanity checks to the script, so it will complain if it cannot find them. Download the file and try running again:
