gnucash-1.8.8 doesn't accept glib-1.2.x?

Somebody on gnucash-de pointed out that gnucash-1.8.8 doesn't compile on 
his SuSE 9.0. The ./configure check for glib fails; the check complains 
glib 0.99 can't be found, but glib-1.2.10 is installed in the system.

Are these versions incompatible, i.e. are people required to have a 
pre-1.x glib around? Or do we need to fix the configure check?
