I did a cvs update of the latest unstable version:

cvs -d :pserver:[EMAIL PROTECTED]:/home/cvs/cvsroot login
cvs -z3 -d:pserver:[EMAIL PROTECTED]:/home/cvs/cvsroot update -P

Then ran autogen:
./autogen.sh --enable-opt-style-install --prefix=/opt5.3 > & autogen.err.txt

it failed with the following error messages:
