Thanks David. I was on v31, Windows 10. I have reinstalled v2.6 and performed the reconciliation without issues. I've little experience with Linux but when I get some time I'll install Linus Mint and gnucash 3.1 to see how I like it.
BTW I also noticed in v3.1 that after unsuccessfully checking and unchecking boxes three or four times, I was dumped back to the transaction screen.
