Thank you! That is an interesting use of Transaction report. Interpretation of the period columns is slightly different from what I had in mind, but this version of the report should give me what I am looking for, with a little adjustment in thought process.

Select either Asset/Liability accounts, or Income/Expense accounts, (or both). >From sorting tab, select Primary-Key = account-name, Secondary-Key = date, secondary-subtotal = month, Display / Subtotal table = enabled.
