Thanks for the thoughts, but it turns out it the problem was "controlled folder access". If it turns out you can't save to a whole bunch of Windows special folders (or subfolders therein), but you can to all other directories, you might have this feature switched on. This was the link that saved me: https://superuser.com/questions/1293897/cannot-save-files-to-desktop-in-windows-10 Everything is working normally again now.
