Thanks for the advice. I tried every which way using absolute paths and relative paths and different directories and permissions. I couldn't get it to work. It always failed when trying to access the changelogs, and I verified every time that the changelog files exist at the path where checkinstall is looking.
I even commented out the changelogs in the cmake file, and it simply errored on the next thing it went looking for. It obviously is some kind of path or permission error that I can't figure out. At any rate, I went ahead and successfully did a - make - make install and just gave up on making the .deb file. 3.7 is installed and works fine. I just like having the .debs so I can quickly install it on other machines in my house.
