John,
You will need to use
 
$sudo apt install gnucash

to install from the repository. 

You may also need to use apt-get instead of apt if the alias apt is not
defined on Debian.  to locate the executable 

$whereis gnucash

should give you the path to the executable any libraries and shared
modules/resources
