I used Quicken (not QuickBooks) before GnuCash, and I did kind of like downloading transactions... I have not done this with GnuCash, and I don't really have enough that I miss it. I do reconcile credit card statements and other items routinely so that I don't miss anything, but I've just gotten a lot better at remembering things. Of course, if you have a lot of transactions, you may really need that download.
