I also have a need for something like this, and get it done by putting a piece of identical and unique text into the description of each transaction which I want to be part of a particular "class."

I run the Transaction Report (click on Reports, Transaction).
Select the appropriate accounts (for me, usually income + expense, including children). On the FILTER tab, in the Transaction Filter box, I enter the unique text which I've put into the description of each transaction.

I export this to html, then open that exported html file with LibreOffice Calc and do whatever I want with it.

For example- the organization is a jazz society, we put on several shows a year. Our income and expense accts are organized functionally, like show admission or membership income; and bands, sound engineer, venue, or marketing expenses. We need those totals for other reasons like reports and budgets for grants.

To look at it by show, I make up a unique code or name or class for each show - for example, 2024-06 for the June show. Running the transaction report filtered down to just transactions that have 2024-06 in the description, gives us all the income and expense for that one show.

Another way to just "see" the expenses with a codename or class -- open the top-level expense acct WITH sub accts ... Right-click the top level acct in the Accts tab, and click "Open SubAccounts." Then type "control-F" as in "Find". In the search criteria, make sure you're on Description, and Contains, and type in your unique code or class, click Find. This SHOWS all expenses from all expense accts which have that code or class in their description. It doesn't add them up tho.

In your case, make up a unique codename or class for each trip and put that in descriptions of expenses in all your different expense accts.

Hope that helps.
Chris

You MAY be able to use the Action field to group transactions, but reporting on it would be extremely limited. Patches are always welcome. Hello, I am wondering if there's any possibility to assign projects to transactions. My use case is to filter transactions across several expense accounts?(transportation, food, entertainment, etc.) for trips. And would be great to be able to draw graphs based on that trips. Something called Classes is mentioned in wiki <https://wiki.gnucash.org/wiki/Project_and_Design_Documentation#Features_and_Functions> and seems to fit my use case. But I can't understand if it's already implemented or is just considered. Neither I was able to find anything about it inside the app (ver. 5.8). Are there any techniques that will allow me doing these things? I'm wondering if Job could work as a substitution. _______________________________________________ gnucash-user mailing list gnucash-user@gnucash.org To update your subscription preferences or to unsubscribe: https://lists.gnucash.org/mailman/listinfo/gnucash-user -----
