In Australia cheques are now hardly used, so that's one less account to deal with. Debit cards are also popular, where it is linked to your savings account, and there is no actual need to "pay a credit card bill". So my only need is to check before paying for anything that I have enough in the daily savings account to pay. If not I get to decide between waiting for an expected deposit or transferring some money from a higher interest account. I'm sure there will be many readers of this list who do not find themselves with this degree of complexity every month and so have no suggestions on how to handle Tom's problem.
