The FSF approached us to do a 3.8 release, and we agreed (at least Gunnar and myself).
The idea is to mainly base it on 3.7.12 rather than on the current cvs since 3.7.12 is fairly tested, except that Gunnar wants one post-3.7.12 patch to go in, namely gunnar_7_13.7.diff, which I copied from the trac server to this directory: http://sporadic.stanford.edu/bump/gnugo/patches/gnugo-3.8/ There are also two patches there called copying_8.1 copyright_8.1 The first changes the copyrights to add 2008. The second changes the GFDL license to v.3. I think the plan is that the code base will be exactly 3.7.12 + gunnar_7_13.7.diff but there will need to be some revisions to the documentation. So the cvs version at savannah is a fork from 3.8 since it contains changes to the code besides that gunnar_7_13.7. These will be in gnugo-3.9.1 which will be the next development version. We might want to make a cvs branch just for the 3.8 release or maybe it won't be necessary. The 2 patches should be added to the CVS. Obviously the first patch will be obsolete in about 2 weeks. Is anyone interested in updating the .dsp and .dsw files for Microsoft VC? The existing files may be found in gnugo-3.7.12.tar.gz.
