The Gnumeric team has never, to my knowledge, been involved with the
MacPorts.

I think the most important help we can offer is advice on what version you
should package unless you intend to simply package them all as they are
released.  Just pop up on irc and ask what an appropriate version is at that
time.  Normally the answer will simply be "the latest stable", but
occasionally
and deep into a development series things might be different.

As for tests, you can get far with "make check-TESTS" in the test
subdirectory.
It's best run from a git checkout because we don't tar ball all the sample
files,
but it can be run from a tar ball.  You might see valgrind failures which
may or
may not be our fault.
