While I am not familiar with the code nor all the decisions that the
Gnumeric team has taken prior implementing any existing function, *I*
can see many possible reasons for any file manipulating software to keep
the current state of a work in progress in its own file format.

Having said that, there could be a configuration option to set the
current user's default file format. If such a decision brings
inconveniences to the user, she/he could be informed and may then
proceed as she/he pleases.

Is this a suggestion or am I missing something?

Cheerio,

Michael
