Related, some free and open source projects are using Anubis

Anubis source code is shared on GitHub.
It needs javascript enabled in the browser, AFAIK.

As I understand, there is now a no-JS option (it tests whether the browser will follow a META redirect and present a cookie, which (AFIAK) every version of Mozilla supported, even before JavaScript existed).  Anubis also only challenges clients that claim to be "Mozilla" in the User-Agent string.  All others (such as "wget") simply pass.
