Comment (by lasarux):

 from http://whalan.com/wordpress/?p=19:

 {{{I googled a bit but there wasn’t much help until i stumbled across a
 long-winded thread which basically said “you don’t have a
 ~/.scribus/scribusfont.rc file”. So, to fix this problem?

 find /usr/share/fonts/truetype/ -maxdepth 1 -type d >
 ~/.scribus/scribusfont.rc

 Now that wasn’t too hard was it?

 After talking to the people in #scribus on freenode, this was a known
 issue, that is now fixed … but ubuntu hasn’t caught up with the latest
 version of scribus. I thought ubuntu was supposed to be better than debian
 with running upto-date packages. The scribus repositories don’t support
 amd-64 but oh well.}}}
