#229: synaptic "Description" field text truncated and/or jumbled

As I recall, this problem first appeared in Alpha 2. Many package
descriptions in synaptic are truncated and/or jumbled, sometimes
containing symbols. The text may change when the mouse pointer passes over
or when the field is clicked. I don't know of any other GTK apps that
exhibit this behavior.
