There are some added features/benefits to using the Sun version which is what I thought most maintainers would naturally opt for. However, the maintenance of this w/o the help of Sun is a pita. I think the middle ground is a 1x hit of generating a patch against vanilla which can be maintained against any patches provided by Sun and any possible security/bug related issues provided by the vendor. I've got some notes on it if anyone would like to take a poke at it. Topics like this will surely come up on the new list..
