Log message:
Revert changes which re-broke basic operation on windows, and attempted
to complete updates to work sanely on all systems ... basically avoid
use
of shell IFS variable wherever possible by specifying all names as
quoted
strings so we can have directory/file names containing spaces and
colons etc.
