The only DPS programming I have done was on AIX 3. It still required an X server with DPS extensions (imagine the simple example of rendering a string and then asking for its length - pretty much requires a full-on PostScript interpreter). The GNUStep DPS/GhostScript backend was never very functional, and AFAIK hasn't worked in about 10 years - but others can definitely provide better answers than I can here.
