i  can only clear up tiny fractions of the problem. While the pound sign is 
U+00A3 this corresponds to the UTF byte sequence C2 A3. And if I remember 
correctly the byte sequence for the incorrect characters on your machine was C2 
C2 A3.

As for your event logging the result is rather frustrating. For the more 
important events no real information gets displayed. Looks like you will have 
to add some more output there. Debugging a guy application never worked for me 
:-(
