There's also the [maintenance mode](https://docs.gocd.org/current/advanced_usage/maintenance_mode.html), which helps make sure that nothing is running and no one is able to run anything new. I don't remmeber if you can run a backup during that time, but it could be used to wind everything down in preparation.
