*January 2025 @ Bookworm*

Dear Reader,

Greetings from Bookworm!

2025 has begun~ a fresh year brimming with possibilities, excitement and
many new books to read and take to our children. This year is also special
for Bookworm as we turn 20. We take this opportunity to take you through *our
values*
<https://bookwormgoa.us4.list-manage.com/track/click?u=3e24e8250913f33ffabd5d536&id=a5930563ef&e=30fd6b9fd9>
which have guided our work and library stakeholders including our team
members, trustees, and volunteers so far.

Read along to find all that’s happening on ground and the new trainings
that are being offered in the coming months.

Library Insights and Throwbacks

*Story Stickering*

Children at Aldona Institute Library and Alban and Aurora Couto Community
Library discussed the book *The Barber‘s Dilemma and Other Stories from
Manmaru Street* by Koki Oguma with Sanika. Post the discussion they wrote
stories from their own experiences and created stickers out of these
stories. It was a fun experience for them to later paste these stickers on
the walls of the library which sparked the curiosity of parents and
visitors.

*Textile Collage with Sujata*

Our young and enthusiastic participants took part in a collage stitching
session with Sujata at the Vinay and Jean Kalgutkar Community Centre,
Saligao. After a round of needle warmup, all the participants stitched a
collage on pouches which they took home as memorabilia.

What’s exciting is that this session led to a discussion to begin a
‘Stitching Club’. To know more about the club and become a member please
call at 8830230489.

*Pop-up near Western Club & Sethu*

Two Pop-up Libraries were organized this month near Vinay and Jean
Kalgutkar Community Centre, Saligao. Children at both the sites were
excited to engage in the library activities planned by participants from
the Library Educators Certificate Course 2024. It was an insightful on
ground learning experience for the participants.

*Story Exploration: **The Lost Thing*

Our team member, Priya Naik, recently conducted a session with children
centered around the book *The Lost Thing *by Shaun Tan. *Read the blog*

to know the preparations and the children's responses towards it.

*Podcast featuring Sujata Noronha*

Our founder, Sujata Noronha featured in a children's literature
podcast, *Critical
Conversations Across Children’s Literature* which brought together unique
perspectives from leading voices in children’s literature in India and the
United States, offering both culturally specific and universally relevant
insights. *Tune in*

for thought-provoking dialogues that illuminate the power of storytelling
in nurturing young minds and promoting meaningful connections across
continents and cultures.

Professional Development Updates

Applications are opening for the next quarter of Filling the Gap module. It
is a year-long online professional development module, which is open to
library educators / organisations that are comfortable with the idea of
radical library practice. We invite you to *apply*

and join us on this journey.

*Library Educator’s Certificate Course Updates*

Participants from the LEC 2024 batch joined us in Goa to pursue the second
part of the curriculum which are the Specialisations. They deep dived into
the various aspects of running a school/community/independent library
through theoretical and practical experiences. On the last day everyone
dressed up as their favourite characters.

*Cultural Connections: Art in the Library *

Online professional development experiential session on *Cultural
Connections: Art in the Library *by Artist Liz Kemp is being organized on
28th of February, 5:00 - 7:00 PM. The online session will explore two
enjoyable ways of combining text and image to make a drawing and short
written composition respectively and is designed to highlight the
possibility of libraries as creative places for everyone. *Click here*

if you would like to register.

*Mentoring Experience*

.

Libraries in School Program Highlights

*Return to Schools*

With the arrival of the new year, the Bookworm team was thrilled to return
to schools with a variety of engaging library activities. It was equally
heartwarming to see the excitement and joy on the children’s faces as they
welcomed the Bookworm team back for another term. The team conducted Read
Aloud and Visual Arts sessions in the different Lead schools and mentored
teachers of Independent schools to plan and hold sessions themselves.

Stay tuned as we bring you some exciting updates from our LiS program.

Mobile Outreach Program Highlights

*Making Fireflies*

Children from our Traveling Library sites participated in a Read Aloud
session based on the book *The Gijjigadus and the Fireflies*. Children were
fascinated by the illustrations—especially the cobra—and were curious about
fireflies, a word new to many of them. As part of the extension activity
they crafted their own fireflies and delighted in playing with their
glowing creations.

*Fireless Cooking*

Children at Cacra enjoyed listening to *Khichdi* and marveling at the
beautiful Gond art illustrations while discovering similar paintings on
nearby walls. The session concluded with a fun and interactive fireless
cooking activity where children along with the facilitators prepared and
relished bhel leaving with happy hearts and stomachs.
