>> Dear colleague, dear Richard, We are pleased to announce the conference: "Open Science, a way to make research better", which will be held in Rome from 5 till 7 March 2015. Open access to publications and research data is a key priority in the scientific and social realm and has strong implications for public and institutional governance, scientific progress and innovation. In particular, open access to research results (publications and data) - the backbone of open science - should represent the central mission of Universities, Research Centers, Scientific and Cultural Institutes. Modern science was born public and inspired by the ethics of sharing knowledge, but in recent decades a new idea of science has made its way perverting the purpose of scientific work, emphasizing the logic of an exclusive control of research results based on aggressive Intellectual Property exploitation strategies. It's time to bring back scientific sharing to the heart of research results. As a whole, the picture that emerges in Italy with regard to open science and to transparency in the academic and research environment emphasizes the need to initiate a dialogue between the different institutions and stakeholders for a real and concrete step forward. In order to meet this need, the Italian Institute of Anthropology and Sapienza University of Rome promote the conference "Open Science, a way to make research better". After a first introductory session, the event features a discussion focusing on current and emerging issues from an interdisciplinary perspective, followed by a debate on the adoption of strategies and responses to the increasing demand for a greater presence of open science in higher education and research. On the occasion of this conference, the new "Associazione Italiana per la Promozione della Scienza Aperta" [Italian Association for the Promotion of Open Science] (http://www.roars.it/online/proposta-per-la-costituzione-di-unassociazione-i taliana-per-la-promozione-della-scienza-aperta/) will be presented for the first time. The conference open to anybody interested in the topic has no registration requirement and is free of charge. Here you can see the program: https://sites.google.com/site/opensciencebetterresearch/programme and for further information: https://sites.google.com/site/opensciencebetterresearch/information Do you think it would be possible to forward this announcement to the Global Open Access List?
