DELIMITATION MAY HIT CONG HARD: In what will be a major development as far as assembly polls are concerned, the Election Commission of India is in the process of completing delimitation of all the 40 assembly constituencies of Goa proposing to make major changes in the existing assembly segments. The fall-out of the delimitation is expected to hit the Opposition, particularly the Congress, very severely. Highly placed sources indicated that the delimitation process has gone as per the agenda of the ruling BJP. (H)

VASCO CARNIVAL: Thousands witnessed the King Momo float parade in the port town of Vasco, which attracted over 42 floats. The highlight of the Vasco carnival floats parade was the lack of the organisation spirit as a result of which many had to return home disappointed. The parade started almost an hour late. In the traditional category Goan fish world and the "Goenkaranchi Xit Koddi" received applause from the crowd. (H)

BSNL SLASHES STD RATES: BSNL on March 3 announced major reduction in long distance tariff for fixed to fixed telephones for calls beyond a distance of 500 km, saying that this bonanza of "the best rates than any competitor" is possible by virtue of its huge infrastructure and established national footprint. The tariff for calls beyond 500 k m will be Rs.4.80 per minute instead of the present rate of Rs.9 during peak hours and Rs.4.50 during non-peak hours. With effect from 7 March, there will be only one rate round-the-clock. (UNI report in GT)

THALI WAS PAID RS.3.75 LAKH IN EXCESS: The State government on Monday submitted their scrutiny and compliance reported regarding bogus bills raised by VP Thali, former Additional Advocate General, where they have said that he has been paid an amount of Rs.3,75,500 which he is not entitled to. (H)

BAN ON COW SLAUGHTER LIKELY: The government is planning to introduce a bill in the parliament to ban cow slaughter, agriculture Minister Ajit Singh informed the Lok Sabha on March 3. As many as twenty-two states and six union territories have already banned the slaughter of cow and its progeny by enacting legislation to that effect, Singh said in a written reply. QUEPEM COUNCILLORS: Two councilors of the Quepem Municipal Council have filed complaints against each other alleging assault. The police provided names of the two as Mr Nana Gaunker and Ms Jamie Daniel. It is learnt that Mr Gaunker had obtained a loan from a bank and Mr Ivo Daniel, husband of Ms Jamie, was the surety. (NT)

MUSIC RULE RELAXATION: Hosting of major entertainment events in Goa will receive some respite, as the State government has announced the 15 days for the year 2003, when loud music can be played upto 12 midnight on cultural and religious occasions. In the first category the timings have been relaxed on March 4 for Carnival, April 20 for Eater, September 1 for Ganesh Chaturti, September 26 and October 4 for Navaratri, October 24 for Diwali eve, December 24 for Christmas eve, December 25 for Christmas and December 31 for New Year's eve. In the second category, the relaxation has been provided for one day each for a temple zatra, a church feast, the Sarvajanik Ganesh immersion day, two days for Carnival and Navaratri days and one day for any other festive event promote by the government or the community. IDEAL HUB FOR AGRO PROCESSING: The Chairman of National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development, Mr YC Nanda, said that Goan farmers should cultivate value-added crops as per the market demand and the state could become a hub in the Konkan area for agro-processing units. Talking to The Navhind Times, Mr Nanda said if the state government proposes a project to promote supportive agency for marketing and publicity of value added agro-products, the bank would provide the necessary financial assistance. SHARP FALL IN OPA WATER LEVEL: Water level at the Opa Water Works dropped sharply on Monday (March 2), threatening a possible water shortage to the talukas of Tiswadi and Ponda, besides parts of Salcete taluka. Taking serious note of the situation, PWD Minister Sudin Dhavlikar has convened an emergency meeting with the PWD officials and engineers on Tuesday, in a bid to restore normalcy in the water supply. Speaking to reporters, Dhavlikar admitted that the water level at the Opa Water Works had declined sharply. (H)

GOA SUDHAROP FELLOWSHIPS: Goa Sudharop Community Development Inc, a non-profit, volunteer NGO working for the better of Goa and Goans worldwide, will present its Goa Sudharop Fellowships 2003 at the Caritas Complex, St Inez, Panjim, on 6 March at 4 pm. YOUTH CONGRESS SUPPORT TO HIT-RAKHAN: The South Goa Youth Congress spokesman and general secretary, Mr Paul Carvalho, extended his support to the demands of Goa Hit Rakhann Manch of preference to Goans in jobs and making 15 years domicile along with knowledge of Konkani language compulsory as pre-conditions for employment. CARNIVAL IN MAPUSA: King Momo's float parade will be held in Mapusa today (March 4 at 3 pm, from the Mapusa Court precincts to the Bodgeshwar temple. A Beat Show, Dance Show, Konkani Musical Show, Prize Distribution, Housie and fireworks will figure in the Carnival celebrations in Mapusa today.

HELD FOR MURDER: Colva police have arrested one of the two accused in an attempt to murder offence. According to the police Francis Coelho resident of Majorda lodged his complaint that on 2 March accused Thomas and Agnel Fernandes, both brothers, assaulted him with a knife. (GT)

CREATING WEALTH OUT OF MINING ORE WASTE (4): "Companies have found it difficult to manage the mountains of the overburden because the massive quantities of the overburden have to be shifted from the site of active mines. Otherwise, it could get mixed with the rich ore deposits. Besides, such overburden has to be piled neatly in dumps. The dumps of the ore reject material are classified as "dead" and "active" depending on their age. The active and dead dumps would now account for about a thousand million MT. This is a massive quantity. Scientifically speaking, it is not actually waste but misplaced wealth because similar material is used elsewhere for metallurgical operations and in engineering applications."
