GOANS OPPOSE US INVASION: Along with the rest of the country, the people from Goa too protested yesterday against the invasion of Iraq by the US and some of its allies, and asked for the immediate cessation of hostilities at a public meeting organised by the World Social Forum, Goa, at the Municipal Garden in Panjim. Dr Wilfred de Souza, Nirmala Sawant, Matanhy Saldanha, Dr Meenakshi Martins, Adv Shanti Maria Fonseca, Rajan Narayan, Adv Satish Sonak, Norma Alvares, Ashwin Tombat, Patricia Pinto, Narayan Palekar, Dr Anupam Saraf, Dr Peter Ronny de Souza, Nishta Desa, Sabina Martins, Adv Gopal Tamba, Roland Martins, Abdul Wahab addressed the meeting among others.

AI, IA TO MAINTAIN FLIGHTS: Air India and Indian Airlines will maintain all scheduled flights from Kuwait during the US-led war on neighbouring Iraq, a top government official has said. "Indian national carriers have always maintained the flights since the start of hostilities in the region and there will not be any disruption or suspension of flights hereafter too," civil aviation secretary K Roy Paul said on March 23. STORMY SESSION LIKELY: The month-long budged session of the Goa Assembly, which starts at the Goa Assembly Complex, Porvorim, at 2.30 pm today, is likely to be a stormy one as the government is expected to come under flak from the Opposition on various issues. (GT)

EXPECTATIONS FROM THE STATE BUDGET: "It would be the third successive budget by the Chief Minister, Mr Manohar Parrikar. His first budget was not really 'his' budget or his party's budget. His second budget was a hurried exercise because of the election year. The budget this year is expected to be different because Mr Parrikar had adequate time to identify the needs for prudent financial planning. For the first time in the history of the budget-making exercise in Goa, the CM has openly invited suggestions from the individuals, organsiations and business lobbies. MISHAPS CLAIM TWO IN VASCO: Anthony, a youth from Mangor Hill, Vasco, lost his life in a fatal accident near the Pai Nursing Home, Vaddem-Vasco on March 23. Anthony was riding pillion on motorcycle along with his friend Alistair Anthony Martins (19), when a Kadamba Transport Corporation shuttle service mini-bus knocked them. In another incident, Vikram Rama Godkar (30) of Belabai, died after he fell down from a tree at Bhutea Bhattt. (NT)

GCCI ADVOCATES FEE SYSTEM: While strongly urging the government to promote Goa as an educational hub, the Goa Chamber of Commerce and Industry has advocated introduction of fee system for education fro middle school to higher secondary level. It has also supported the proposal for full-day school in Goa as being followed in other parts of the country. (H)

COMUNIDADES SEEK RESTORATION OF RIGHTS: The Association of Components of Comunidades has urged the National Delimitation Commission to restore the right and privileges, which they enjoyed before December 19, 1961. The Association has voiced its protest over the formation of assembly constituencies, comprising of areas or localities covering the private villages belonging to the Comunidades in Goa. (NT)

WIDOW GANG-RAPED: The Bicholim police yesterday arrested three persons on the charge of raping a 29-year-old widow from Tisk-Usgao in Bicholim. The woman had gone to collect cashew fruits at one of the plantations when the accused waylaid her and allegedly gang-raped her. (GT)

BPL CENSUS: Identification of families under Below Poverty Line (BPL) for the Tenth Five Year Plan has started in the state with effect from 1 March as per the instructions issued by the Ministry of Rural Development, Government of India. (GT)

…ACROSS POLEM: Polem, the bordering region of Goa is famous for all sorts of illegal transportation activities, be it liquor, timber, electronic goods, petrol and a host of other things that are dearer across the border at Karwar, in neighbouring Karnataka. And now, mud has been added to this growing list. Illegal transportation of mud from Polem to Karwar has been going on in full swing in broad daylight, right through the Polem check-post. (H)

KONKANI CLASSES IN CANADA: The Konkani classes, which started on March 07 with 15 students, are almost a third of the way through. The teacher, Joao Manual Pereira, started the first lesson with the basics of the Devanagri consonants and vowels, necessary for the students to get a basis to pronounce Konkani correctly. Pereira has done an excellent job so far and the participants are well on their way to getting a solid grounding in amchi bhas. Joao converses with them more and more in Konkani. Each student is given a folder of lessons and an audio cassette of the Devanagri alphabet. The cassette also contains some popular Konkani songs. Each student also received a copy of the Goan Millenium Directory which, among other things, also contains lyrics of songs and Konkani proverbs. Joao e-mails all students the re-cap of each previous lesson together with home-work for the following week. In another three weeks the students should all be able to sing (and understand) the lyrics of "Molbaillo Dou" from the movie "Amchem Noxib". (Tim de Mello [EMAIL PROTECTED]

UMBRELLA FESTIVAL: The traditional "Sontreo" (umbrella) Festival of Shree Shantadurga Kuncolikarin was celebrated with religious fervour and gaiety at Cuncolim on March 22. The revelers danced with the umbrellas to the beat of drums while others greeted each other with gulal, Cuncolim MLA, Joaquim Alemao, also participated in the festivities at Tolleabhat. (H)

VASCO SHIGMO TODAY: The floats, romtamel and folk dances will revel the crowd at Vasco when the Shigmotsav celebrations will get underway today at 4.30 pm near Thakker House. (NT)

"GOMANTAK", "GT" ANNIVERSARY TODAY: The forty-first anniversary of "Gomantak" and the fifteenth anniversary of "Gomantak Times" (GT) will be celebrated at Gomantak Bhavan, St Inez, Panaji, today. A "Tourist Guide", published by Gomantak-Sakaal will also be released by Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar in the evening. (GT)
