HITRAKHAN ACTIVISTS GET BAIL: Eleven activists of the Goa Hitrakhan Manch who were arrested for alleged trespass and threatening Goa Meat Complex, managing director HK Malviya, were released on bail yesterday evening. (GT)

KA TEACHERS' APPOINTMENT: The Chief Minister, Mr Manohar Parrikar, has said that the Secretary for Art and Culture has been instructed to prepare a report on the controversial appointment of the two music teachers from outside the State at Kala Academy. This was informed to Prashant Naik and Purnanand Chari when they took a delegation to the Chief Minister on the protest action, according to a press note issued by the Goa Hit-Rakhan Manch. (H)

RASH DRIVERS WILL BE DEALT WITH: The Goa police department has warned vehicle operators that it would strongly recommend the suspension of licences of drivers responsible for accidents and permits of transport vehicles to the Directorate of Transport, Panaji. (GT)

POLICY ON BIO-TECH: Fr Francisco Sardinha said that government should now focus its attention on promotion of bio-technology in the State and frame a policy about it at the earliest, even as he called the government to implement the budget proposals in true spirit and not let them remain on paper. PRIORITY FOR DAYANAND SCHEME: The state government will give priority in sanctioning the applications for Dayanand Social Security Scheme submitted by windows, handicapped persons and earlier beneficiaries under the Dayanand Smruti Scheme. The assurance was given by Social Welfare Minister Ramrao Dessai when MLAs urged the government to clear such applications expeditiously. (GT)

PANEL MONITOR SCHEMES: Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar said a seven-member special committee of MLAs including Opposition legislators would be formed soon to oversee all developmental schemes including the ambitious one to wipe unemployment in the state. He was replying to points raised by members on Budget 2003 in the Goa Assembly. (GT)

"DECLINE IN SEX RATION ALARMING": Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar said the decline in the sex ratio was a dangerous and worrisome trend and the government would come down heavily on clinics offering pre-natal sex-selection tests. While stating that action against the guilty will not be made a public issue as such, he informed the Goa Assembly that 'selective murders' would not be tolerated. (GT)

"EXEMPT INDUSTRIES FROM VAT": In a memorandum submitted to the Chief Minister, the Goa unit of the All-India Trade Union Congress demanded that value added tax should not be made applicable to the industries in the State and urged the government to ensure that benefits given to the industries in Himachal Pradesh and Uttaranchal be made available in the State. BAG STOLEN: A bag containing Rs.25,700 alongwith a cheque, passbook and other important documents, was robbed from the car of Shripad Dattaram Diamodkar at Dharbandora when he had gone to purchase some eatables at a tea shop. (GT)

ADMINISTRATOR, SECRETARY FOR TALEIGAO: The Directorate of Panchayats yesterday appointed a panchayat secretary and an administrator for the newly-created Taleigao panchayat after it came into existence. (GT)

TOWN PLANNING LEFT OUT OF CITY CORP: Goa's capital city may have got a municipal corporation but at the very outset, it seems its wings have been clipped as far as town planning is concerned. It was clearly stated in section 255 of The City of Panaji Corporation Act that the Corporation would be the planning and development authority for the areas coming under it but the notification issued has declared that all the provisions of the Act comes into force (from April 1, 2000) except some sections including section 255. (H)

SCOOTERIST CRUSHED TO DEATH: A 45-year-old scooter rider, Dasharath Ghatwal, from Devulwada Shirgao died on the spot on Tuesday evening, after he was hit by an oncoming truck at Navelim-Sanquelim. (H)

YOUTH CRUSHED TO DEATH: Raghuvir Shet, a 30-year-old youth from Fatorda, died after he came under a speeding train at Majorda. The police sub-inspector of Railway Police, Mr Tony Camra, stated that the youth committed suicide. (NT)

WOMAN BURNT WHILE COOKING: One Shakuntala Dodamani, a 23-year-old resident of Shantinagar, Mangor Hill, Vasco, suffered 85 per cent burn injuries when she accidentally caught fire while cooking on the stove. She was married about five years back to one Prakash Harijan. (GT)

OUTPOST AT NEW VADDEM: Vasco PI Mahesh Gaonkar assured citizens of New Vaddem, Vasco, that he would do his best to get sanctioned a police outpost at New Vaddem. (GT)

BRITTO'S EX-PUPILS MEET: The Ex-Student's Association of St Britto High School, Mapusa, will convene its monthly meeting on April 6 at 10.30. All past students of the school are invited for the meeting, which intends to chalk out the activities for the Association. (H)

PINTO GETS AWARD: In the state council meeting of Goa Bharat Scouts and Guide Association on March 30, at Panaji, Ms Iona Pinto of St Michael's High School, Anjuna, received the state-level award for "Best Guide Captain" of the year. Mr TE Philip of the same school and Ms Bernadette D'Souza of St Theresa's High School, Candolim, were felicitated for their long service in scouting/guiding. (NT)
