BUS FARE HIKE: The State government and Goa Bus Owners Association yesterday agreed upon a new revised hike in bus fares which will come into effect after approval by the cabinet. Commuters would be charged Rs.4 for the first five kilometers and 40 paise per km for subsequent 20 kms (that is 5 to 20 kms). 30 paise would be charged for the next 10 kms (that is 20 to 30 kms) and 35 paise per km for the remaining distance covered. SARS QUARANTINE AREA: A special quarantine area has been identified in the Goa Medical College Hospital at Bambolim to take care of any suspected case of Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome and a doctor has been posted at the Dabolim airport. Dr Rajan Kunkolienkar, Medical Superintendent, GMC, has been designated as the Nodal Officer and a two-bedded room in the private block has been identified for isolation of the suspected persons. (H)
HEART ATTACKS RISING: Heart attack, the second most common cause of death, is rapidly turning into a 'lifestyle disease' in Goa, with an emerging trend of affecting the younger age group between 30 to 40 years. Hitherto, it used to be the 45 plus age group, which used to be most susceptible to heart attacks, however, now a disturbing trend has been noticed where heart attacks are becoming increasingly common below the age 40 group. Says Dr Rufino Monteiro, cardiologist, "Heart attacks are now becoming a disease of the affluent rather than that of the poor." (H)
NURSE TRAPPED IN FAULTY ELEVATOR: A nurse at the Goa Medical College hospital was trapped on the second floor of the elevator for an hour. On reaching the second floor, when she tried to open the door, it would not open. There was no lift man. However, a relative of a patient, standing in the passage heard her banging on the door. He approached the receptionist, who asked him to contact the higher up. The duplicate keys of the elevator could not be traced… (H)
GMC LIVING WITH WATER SHORTAGE: It is not a hidden fact that the Goa Medical College, Bambolim, has been facing acute water shortage over the years leading to cancellation of operations and other activities. However, for tiding over the water shortage government authorities decided to construct a water storage tank in its vicinity, which, however, could not be used because it was improperly built. (NT)
WATER SITUATION IN GOA: The Chief Minister, Mr Manohar Parrikar, yesterday informed the State legislative assembly that water situation in the state was quite good and that there was no need to be panicky abut the water problem. (NT)
AITUC FLAYS GHM'S TACTICS: The Goa unit of the All India Trade Union Congress yesterday categorically stated its opposition to the tactics recently employed by activists of the Goa Hitrakhan Manch. Speaking to reporters AITUC's local general secretary Christopher Fonseca said that his organisation did not believe in personal and disrespectful acts against individuals. (GT)
CENTRAL TRADE UNIONS TO PROTEST: Central Trade Unions, accompanied by major workers federations will be organizing a general strike, the largest on in recent times, on 21 May. Announcing this the AITUC national general secretary and former MP, Gurudas Das Gupta, said that the "immediate provocations" for the strike included the government's decision to reduce Provident Fund interest by 1 to 1.5 per cent, exclusion of AITUC representatives from the PF board of trustees and privatization of electricity departments, among others. The Employee Provident Fund organisations have an estimated deposit base of Rs.1,50,000 crore with an estimated 2,75,00,000 beneficiaries. AITUC claims that the decrease in interest rates will lead to a reduction of Rs.1,500 crore in the income of the beneficiaries. (GT)
HELD FOR PROCURING GIRLS: The Vasco police arrested one Theofil D'Costa of Baina who has been accused of procuring minor girls for prostitution. The arrest followed the rescue of six minor girls from the Baina red light area on Thursday. (GT)
BAILANCHO EKVOTT DHARNA: Bailancho Ekvott yesterday staged a dharna (sit-in) in front of the Margao police station for alleged harassment meted out to a woman. Some members of the Ekvott also met the senior police officers and demanded immediate action into the matter. The protest was a fall-out of the assault on Ms Timotina D'Silva by her husband. (NT)
CLOSURE OF WOMEN POLICE STATION: Though the police stations are normally kept open for 24 hours, the closure of the women's police station at old GMC complex, Panaji, at 6 pm has been causing hardships to the doctors and families accompanying couples at the family counseling centre there. (GT)
MOVE TO SAVE MAYEM LAKE: Mayem lake, Goa's major tourist attraction, will receive some attention, before the rains, to save it from further siltation. The government will initiate measures to prevent the flow of mining silt even as a study is being contemplated to establish whether it can be excavated to increase its depth. (GT)
GROUND WATER OFFICERS: The State government has appointed two executive engineers as "Ground Water Officers" to implement and to carry out the purpose of the Goa Ground Water Regulation Act. (GT)

"FRUIT FEST" AT CAMPAL: Come the warm summer month of May and the city will play host to the first ever Fruit fest in the State. Organised by the Botanical Society of Goa, in association with the city of Panaji Corporation, and various governmental and agricultural organisations, the three-day fest will prove to be a juicy affair. The "Carnival of Fruits" will feature a variety of traditional, tropical fruit almost exclusively from the Konkan region. From the juicy mangoes, the humble kanttam and churna (wild berries), the limelight will focus exclusively on the fruit and their products. (GT)
ANNUAL MAGAZINE OF ARPORA SCHOOL: Former students of St Joseph's High School in Arpora will be glad to note that their once-famous and pioneering alma mater, founded by William Robert Lyons (Fr Lyons) in 1887, is in the process of being rejuvenated. Principal Fr Zeferino D'Souza and the present headmaster Tomazinho Cardozo seem to be making every effort towards this aim. There is now a lot more excitement than earlier among the students as well as the teaching staff, and quite a bit of this spirit reflects in their annual magazine "Expressions", the 2003 edition (second issue) of which was released by Fr Avinash Rebello, Rector of Saligao Seminary, recently. The illustrated magazine has 150 students besides teachers and parents contributing interesting articles, poems, essays, etc, in Konkani, English and Marathi. (GoaNOW)
GETTING MARRIED AGAIN: Getting married once is enough. But not for this lady, who had to do the formalities all over again in the civil registrar's office in Panaji because record of her original certificate of marriage could not be traced! Sounds strange but it is true. This incident was narrated in the Goa Assembly by Santa Cruz MLA Victoria Fernandes. She said many people are put to great hardship as they are unable to trace birth, death and marriage records in the civil registrar's office at Panaji. (GT)
PRE-1971 ERA'S RECORDS: Birth, death and marriage records from the pre-1971 era will be shifted to the Archives Department within 18 months. This was informed by Minister for Law Francis D'Souza while replying to a query posed by Curtorim MLA, Francisco Sardinha. "The High Court has directed us to take the step so that the records can be scientifically treated and preserved," stated Mr D'Souza, hinting that the records would also be available on micro-print. VEHICLE REGISTRATION: Guddi Padwa seems to have induced a vehicle-purchase spree among the people of Bardez and Pernem. The number of registrations of new vehicles soared at the Assistant Directorate of Transport, Mapusa, with the office collecting registration tax amounting to a whopping Rs.9,63,682 for the two days of April 1 and April 3. CEDRIC TO COACH GREECE: Former India hockey coach Cedric D'Souza, dumped by the Indian Hockey Federation during the 2002 World Cup in Kuala Lumpur, has a new job. He's been appointed national coach of Greece, hosts of the 2004 Olympic Games, to prepare Greece's men's and women's national teams for the next Olympics. D'Souza had coached the Indian team for the 1994 Sydney World Cup and 1996 Atlanta Olympics, where India finished fifth and eighty respectively. (GT)
